Daniel Gilbreth was one of Frank and Lillian Gilbreth's 12 children
whose family was immortalized in the books "Cheaper by the Dozen" and
"Belles on their Toes."

The Gilbreths, of Montclair, were engineers who developed
time-management techniques and were pioneers in the area of "scientific
management."

Stories about their family and their time-saving practices were the
focus of the popular books written by two of their children and later
made into movies.

Daniel Gilbreth was good-natured when people would find out that he was
one of the "Cheaper by the Dozen" children, said his son, David. "He
loved talking about it," he said.

And Irene Gilbreth, who met Daniel in high school and was married to
him for 65 years, said her husband received the most interest from
children. "This was constant," she said. "They would refer to the book
and the movie."

Mr. Gilbreth, who was the fourth of the Gilbreth family's six sons,
died Tuesday. He was 88.

Mr. Gilbreth grew up in Montclair and lived there until moving to West
Caldwell in 1998. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and
attained the rank of lieutenant. He was stationed in the Pacific before
returning home to attend the Wharton School of Business at the
University of Pennsylvania.

He worked with his father-in-law in Manhattan for a short time, then
opened his own export business in the 1950s, called D.B. Gilbreth and
Co. The company exported Japanese products, primarily electronics, said
David Gilbreth, who took over running the West Caldwell company when
his father retired in 2001.

Mr. Gilbreth was active in Montclair, where he served as president of
the Rotary Club, a member of the Upper Montclair Country Club, the
Wranglers and the "Dun Workin' Club.

David Gilbreth recalls his family going to services together with his
grandmother at the First Congregational Church in Montclair, where his
father served as a deacon.

He said he saw the 1950 movie "Cheaper by the Dozen," starring Myrna
Loy and Clifton Webb, as a small child. But he didn't quite understand
that his father was one of the children depicted in it until he was
older.

He said his family joked that his grandmother had her family's big
house torn down and moved to an apartment once her children had
finished college, so they couldn't move back home. In reality, he said,
the Gilbreths were a close-knit family who got together for family
reunions, even though the grown children lived throughout the U.S.

Irene Gilbreth said of her husband, "He had fond memories of his
family, they were very close." David Gilbreth said one of his family's
proudest moments was when his grandmother was featured on a U.S.
postage stamp released in 1983.

Mr. Gilbreth's brother Robert, who is younger by three years, described
Daniel as a devoted family man who had a generous nature and loved to
spend his free time fishing at his summer house on Nantucket Island in
Massachusetts.

"He loved boating and he loved his family. He loved to take us out for
bluefish and would take the excess fish no one wanted to the county
nursing home," Robert Gilbreth recalled.

Irene Gilbreth said her husband was a member of the Nantucket Yacht
Club, and David Gilbreth added that his father had named their family's
yacht "Rena" after his mother.

Daniel Gilbreth was such a successful fisherman that he often had
excess bluefish, even after giving it away to family and friends. He
made sure never to waste it, but gave it to those less fortunate, said
his brother, Robert, "He was a kind, generous and thoughtful person."

A memorial service for Daniel Gilbreth will be held later this year,
his wife said.

Survivors include his wife and son of West Caldwell; daughter, Margaret
Gilbreth Nipper of Omaha, Neb.; two grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.

The surviving siblings from the Gilbreth family are Robert of Franklin,
N.H.; Frederick of Larchmont, N.Y.; and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey of
California.
